Ok, here’s the post a lot of people have been asking for. What is bulletproof coffee? Well, you will have to trust me, because it’s going to sound a bit strange! Bulletproof coffee is coffee made with freshly brewed coffee, butter and coconut oil.
My sister-in-law Beth runs a blog called communityeats.com – she makes tasty, healthy food and she writes about self-care, living healthy lives and how important it is to find your people and share life together. I love when a new post comes out. A few months ago she posted about bulletproof coffee, and I was super skeptical and didn’t try it. You can read it here:
When I took up this challenge, I knew there was no way that I was going to be able to live without coffee. I’ve given up dairy before and didn’t like any of the milk alternatives in coffee, but bulletproof coffee was in the back of my mind and I knew I should at least try it. Honestly, I really like it, and although it tastes different to coffee with milk, it is tasty in it’s own way.
Recipe
- Each morning, I make coffee as normal and get out my blender. I don’t have a special type of blender, just a regular version, so you don’t need any special equipment. I haven’t tried it, but I bet you could also make this with a hand held blender.
- Once the coffee is brewed put it into the blender, and add one tablespoon of butter and one teaspoon of coconut oil. Blend it for about 20 seconds.
- Pour into a mug and drink. It is creamy, foamy and delicious.
Some versions of this recipe call for 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, but I didn’t like the taste. I know that coconut oil is very good for you, and I didn’t want to leave it out, so I cut it down. Feel free to add more or to leave it out.
I have found extra virgin, organic coconut oil in Tesco’s in the health food section, all health food shops stock it, and many supermarkets do. But make sure you get extra-virgin (this means that it hasn’t been heated to extreme temperature) and make sure you get organic (you don’t want all the chemicals found in non-organic oils). Also, it’s really important to get unsalted, good-quality butter. The best two options sold in supermarkets are Yeo Valley and Kerry gold. You are looking for butter from grass-fed cows – again it really raises the quality of the butter.
So, who is up for trying it? Let me know what you think!
Update - No headache! I have been very tired today though, I really do need to sleep more. It's Friday and I know I'm going to miss having a glass of wine tonight. But, there are only 12 days left now! Jake and I are off to Pizza Express for a lunch date, I'm hoping that I'll be able to eat more than a green salad!
