Hi. I'm Beth.
I'm 27. Married. Have three little kiddos. And I'm currently studying for a BSc Education and Training.
I love healthy living, eating whole foods, drinking lots of water, getting outdoors often and I've recently introduced essential oils into my life. But, I know that I eat too much sugar. I bake a lot with the kids, and end up eating more than I plan. At the moment, I eat bread, pasta and oats at least once daily, and I am still rummaging through the piles of holiday treats stashed around my kitchen. Although I know that I am not as healthy as I could be, more importantly, I'm not as healthy as I want to be.
This term, for my degree course, I have to run a health promotion campaign. I have to do something that raises awareness of a health issue facing children and young people. Listening to the news on the radio this week, I learnt that over 31% of primary school aged children in the South West of England (where I live) are obese. This has a huge impact later on in life, as it's commonly accepted that obesity raises rates of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other serious illnesses. Currently, there are loads of news articles and medical reports explaining that eating too much sugar is one of the main causes of obesity.
I could have gone into a primary school and run a lecture for all the parents where I tell everyone about how bad sugar is, and how everyone else needs to change their lifestyle, but the reality, is that I need to change my lifestyle too. I'm a great believer in putting your money where your mouth is, so here goes.
For the next 21 days, I am going to complete a sugar fast. I will be using a sugar detox plan that I sourced online, and avoiding all forms of sugar, including carbohydrates (that our body turns into sugar), most fruits (that contain lots of sugar), all forms of artificial sugar (anyone who knows me well, knows of my personal hatred for aspartame) and all processed foods (because 'added sugar' is a main ingredient). I'm going to be blogging here, and inviting lots of friends and friends of friends to follow along, laugh at my impending sugar withdrawals, and hopefully learn a little along the way!
As of the 8th January 2015, see ya sugar!
